The Eastern Kentucky University softball team secured a 3–2 victory over Austin Peay on March 15, clinching its first ASUN Conference series win of the season.
This win is significant for the Colonels, who improved their record to 13-14 overall and 2-1 in conference play. The game saw EKU trailing until the bottom of the fifth inning, when Kennedy Drafton hit a two-RBI double that gave her team the lead and ultimately the series.
After falling behind early, EKU’s defense limited Austin Peay to just one hit after the third inning. Tayteum Vigansky earned her fourth win of the season by pitching three innings in relief, allowing only one hit and striking out three batters.
Austin Peay took an early lead with a run in the first inning and extended it with a solo home run in the third. EKU responded in the fourth inning as Jaelin Haynes delivered a sacrifice fly to bring Kaitlyn Wallis home. In the fifth, singles from Reese Knox and Makayla Mathis set up Drafton’s decisive double to right-center field.
The Colonels maintained control for the remainder of the game, retiring Austin Peay’s side in order in both the sixth and seventh innings. The final out came on a groundout to Jada McLeod, sealing EKU’s comeback victory.
Looking ahead, Eastern Kentucky will host Bellarmine for a series on March 21–22. Bellarmine enters with a 9-17 record after winning its own conference series against Lipscomb.
