Volleyball Advances to Conference Semifinals; Sweeps Belhaven
The Berea College volleyball team won their first-ever Collegiate Conference of the South Tournament match on Tuesday night as they swept Belhaven University 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-18).
With the win, the Mountaineers improve to 21-8 on the season and remain unbeaten against the Blazers all season with a 3-0 record.
The Mountaineers took the early advantage in the first set, jumping to a 5-1 lead. Sophomore Deanna De La Torre notched two kills early for Berea. The Mountaineers continued to maintain their lead en route to a 25-18 win in set one. Berea finished with a .417 hitting percentage and 16 kills.
The Blazers flipped the script at the start of the second set by opening with a 9-3 lead. Berea responded by outscoring Belhaven 12-6 to draw even at 15 apiece. De La Torre and an ace by sophomore Idymel Ayala Rivera gave Berea a two-point cushion. An ace from sophomore Amanda Castro Diaz secured the second set victory for the Mountaineers 25-22.
The final set was a back-and-forth affair to start off as neither side was able to gain more than a two-point lead. After being tied 15-15, Berea fired off five-straight points to take hold of the set. A kill by junior Julie Santana, back-to-back Blazer attack errors, a senior Carolina Robles kill, and an ace by senior Fabiana De Jesús gave the Mountaineers the momentum. Consecutive kills from Robles sealed the deal for Berea as they completed the sweep 25-18 in the last set.
The Mountaineers look ahead to their next match-up, taking on top-seeded Covington College in the CCS Conference Tournament semifinals. The semifinal and championship rounds will be held at Covington due to the Scots winning the regular season. The tie for first serve will be announced in a few days.
