Second Half Three-Point Shooting Plagues Mountaineers In Loss To Midway

It was a tale of two different halves from beyond the arc for the Berea College men's basketball team as they fell to Midway University 77-66 on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, the Mountaineers fall to 6-5 on the season.

The Mountaineers began the game shooting well from three-point land as they converted seven of their 18 attempts. However, the script flipped in the second half as they hit just two of their 12 three-point shots.

Senior Isaac Caudill led the game in scoring with 20 points while shooting eight for 14 overall. To go along with his scoring, Caudill also collected eight rebounds. Junior Trey Minter recorded 16 points and six assists, while freshman Andrew Jones hit four three-pointers for 12 points and sophomore Jarel Montgomery chipped in 10 points.

The first half was a tight contest with 14 lead changes in the first 20 minutes. Going into the first timeout of the game the Mountaineers led 15-11 as four different Mountaineers found their names in the scoring column. Coming out of the timeout, the Eagles took the lead with a 5-0 run, but a three-pointer by Jones put Berea back in front 18-16 with 11:21 left in the half.

Each side continued to throw their shots for the rest of the half as neither team could build a large advantage. The Mountaineers seemed to take a four-point advantage going into halftime as freshman Bryce Riley got into the lane for a layup, but Midway's Dae'Shawn White knocked down a three-pointer just before the buzzer sounded to make the score 33-32 going into halftime.

The start of the second half mirrored the first as each team fought for control of the game. Neither team held more than a three-point lead until 8:45 remaining in the contest. The first 12 minutes of the second half saw nine lead changes. The Eagles took a five-point lead with a pair of free throws with 8:11 left in the game, however Berea tied the contest behind a 7-2 as Minter knocked down a three-pointer and finished a layup to go along with Caudill's turnaround jumper. However, Midway's White sparked a 7-0 run with a shot from beyond the arc and the Eagles would use that cushion to come away with a 77-66 win.

The Berea College men's basketball team will look to bounce back on Tuesday as they host Earlham College. Tipoff is scheduled for noon at the Seabury Center.
