Mountaineers Cruise by Blazers
The Berea College women's basketball team remains undefeated in conference action with a 78-52 win over Belhaven University.
The win improves Berea to 12-1 overall and 4-0 in CCS play.
Junior Aaliyah Hampton led the way for the Mountaineers with a game-high 20 points (5-13 overall, 9-10 FT), seven rebounds, and three steals. Sophomore Dailyn Spalding scored 13 points and grabbed six rebounds, both season highs. Junior Kauri McKeithen corralled a season-high eight rebounds.
The Mountaineers were a force on the backboard as a team, winning the rebounding battle 53-43. Defensively, Berea forced the Blazers to shoot 33.3 percent from the floor and just 21.4 percent from beyond the arc.
The first quarter was back-and-forth as both teams fought for control. After opening the game with three missed shots, Hampton put Berea on the board with a personal 6-0 run after converting four free throws and converting a layup. The quarter was capped off with McKeithen connecting a pass to sophomore Jayden Merriweather for a three-pointer to give Berea a 17-15 advantage going into the second quarter.
The second quarter was key for the Mountaineers, outscoring Belhaven 19-8. After Belhaven tied the contest with a layup, Berea took a nine-point lead with a 9-0 run. Senior Destiny Combs ignited the run with a tough and-one. Berea used the early momentum to enter halftime with a 36-23 lead.
In the second half, the Mountaineers continued to dominate as the Blazers never pulled closer than 12 points. Berea shot an efficient 10 for 19 from the field in the third quarter to outscore Belhaven 27-18. The Mountaineers took care of business at the charity stripe as they converted 20 of their 24 attempts en route to a 78-52 win over Belhaven.
The Berea College women's basketball team will be back in action tomorrow as they take on LaGrange College in a CCS matchup. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. in the Seabury Center.
