Spalding Scores Career High; Mountaineers Score Season High in Win Over LaGrange
The Berea College women's basketball team had five different players finish the afternoon in double figures in the points column as they defeat LaGrange College 81-59 on Saturday.
The win improves the Mountaineers to 13-1 on the season and 5-0 in conference play. The Mountaineers are currently on a three-game winning streak.
Scoring was plentiful as Berea recorded their season-high in points. Sophomore Dailyn Spalding scored a career-high 17 points to go along with five assists, and four rebounds. Sophomore Drea Satori scored 15 points and dished out five assists. Sophomore Jayden Merriweather knocked down a game-high three three-pointers to finish the afternoon with 13 points and junior Aaliyah Hampton notched 11 points. Freshman Lynkaylah James recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. James was also a big presence in the paint with three blocks.
The Mountaineers led most of the contest as LaGrange's only lead was 8-6 with 5:19 left in the first quarter. Spalding put Berea out in front with a putback layup through the defense for an and-one finish. The Mountaineers finished the first quarter shooting 33.3 percent from the field and had a 17-12 advantage going into the second.
Both sides had similar field goal percentages in the second quarter as Berea shot slightly better at 36.4 percent compared to the Panther's 35.7 percent. However, the difference appeared at the free throw line as the Mountaineers converted eight of their nine attempts, while LaGrange finished the quarter three for four from the line. The aggression from Berea benefited them as they led 35-25 going into halftime.
In the second half, the Mountaineers got hot from beyond the arc as they shot three for six from three in the third quarter and four for five in the fourth. The Panthers attempted to match Berea to chip into the deficit, however, their shots weren't falling, finishing two for six from beyond the arc in the second half. The three-point deficit was just what the Mountaineers were searching for as they came away with an 81-59 win over LaGrange.
The Mountaineers return to the hardwood on Wednesday, traveling to face Covenant College for a CCS contest. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. in Lookout Mountain, Ga.
