Mountaineers Secure Conference Regular-Season Championship in their Win over Maryville

The Berea College women's basketball team clinched their fifth regular-season conference championship as they dominated against Maryville College Scots 77-30 on senior day in the Seabury Center.

The Mountaineers grabbed their 22nd win of the season and hold an impressive 22-2 record and 14-1 record in the Collegiate Conference of the South contests.

Freshman center, LynKaylah James guided the way for the Berea win with a career-high 20 rebounds and 17 points. James now has recorded seven double-doubles this season. Sophomore Jayden Merriweather shot 50% from the three-point line which helped her add 15 points to also lead the way for the Mountaineers. Senior Aaliyah Hampton also had 11 points and grabbed three boards.

James's layup at the start of the game helped Berea to start a 9-0 run. At the end of the first quarter, Berea led Maryville 20-8. The Mountaineers dominated in the paint along with their tough defense allowed them to extend their lead to 30 points going into halftime. Berea forced Maryville to turn the ball over 26 times and scored 34 points off those turnovers. Courtney Caruthers was the only player from Maryville to score double digits with 14 points and she shot 50% from the field.

Berea was a force on the backboards, winning the rebounding battle 43 to the Scots' 34. The Mountaineers also forced Maryville into a poor shooting night as the Scots shot 20% overall and converted just one of their 17 three-point attempts.
