Spalding Wins Player Award; Six Women’s Basketball Athletes Awarded All-Conference Honors

Six members of the Berea College women's basketball team earned All-CCS honors, while one was awarded a player award on Wednesday, conference officials announced.

Sophomore Dailyn Spalding was named CCS Defensive Player of the Year and selected to the all-conference second team. Senior Destiny Combs, junior Aaliyah Hampton, and freshman LynKaylah James was awarded all-conference first team. Sophomores Drea Satori and Jayden Merriweather landed on the all-conference second team. Satori was also named to the CCS All-Sportsmanship Team

The Mountaineers have had a fantastic 2022-23 campaign, finishing the regular season with a 23-2 overall record. Berea claimed the CCS regular-season title, their fifth-consecutive regular-season title, with a 15-1 conference record.

Spalding has been an important piece to the Mountaineers defense that leads the conference in points per game allowed (53.6). The Lebanon, Ky. native ranks seventh in the conference in steals with 48 total. On the season, Spalding has average 7.0 points, 2.8 rebounds, 2.7 assists (7th in the conference) and 1.9 steals.

Combs ranks in the top-10 in rebounding in the conference, averaging 6.5 boards a game. This season, Destiny played in all 25 games for the Mountaineers, recording five double-doubles in those contests. She has corralled a total of 165 boards in 16 conference games.

Hampton ranks fifth in the conference in scoring, averaging 14.5 points per game. She has scored in double figures in 21 games this season, with a season-high 27 against LaGrange. Defensively Hampton has been impressive as well, ranking sixth in the conference in steals with 51 total.

James has had a fantastic start to her Berea career, averaging 11.6 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. She has recorded seven double-doubles for Berea has grabbed double digits rebounds in 12 games. The Bowling Green, Ky. native notched a career-high 23 rebounds against Huntingdon in early February. In conference standings, James ranks first in field goal percentage (.568), third in blocks (42), and fourth in rebounding (201).

Satori is having a career-year for Berea, averaging 10.4 points per game and 2.8 assists. She ranks second in the conference in assists (72) and second in minutes played (32.8 per game). Drea as recorded at least three assists in 14 games. She also has a 1.2 assist/turnover ratio.

Merriweather has upped her three-point field goal percentage from her freshman year, shooting 36.5% from beyond the arc (fourth best in the conference). Jayden has hit a three-pointer in 17 games this season of which, 15 games, she hit two or more three-pointers. On the defensive side of the ball, Merriweather ranks ninth in the conference in steals averaging 1.9 a game.

The Berea College women's basketball team begin their post-season run tonight, hosting Agnes Scott College in the quarterfinals of the CCS conference tournament. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. in the Seabury Center.
