The only school district in Nicholas County suffered declining enrollment in the 2022-23 school year, according to the Kentucky Department of Education.

There were 1,207 students in Nicholas County School District, 1.1% lower than the year before.

Enrollment in Nicholas County fell short of the state's trend of increasing enrollment.

Of all the students welcomed in the 2022-23 school year, 50.3% of them were boys, and 49.7% were girls.

Data also showed that most of the students were white, representing 92.8% of Nicholas County School District's total enrollment.

Nicholas County School District has a main office in Carlisle and is the only school district within Nicholas County.

Despite escaping some of the pandemic's educational disruptions, Kentucky's achievement gaps have remained an issue since 2019. In the eighth-grade reading assessments, for example, Hispanic students scored eight points lower than their white peers, and the gap reached 15 points in math. Black students fared even worse, falling more than 20 points behind and facing a failure rate nearly double that of their white counterparts.
