Men's Basketball Drops Overtime Contest Against Covenant

The Berea College men's basketball team lost a hard-fought match to the Covenant College Scots, falling 87-78 in overtime on Wednesday night.

The loss puts the Mountaineers at 11-9 overall and 3-4 in CCS play.

Sophomore Jarel Montgomery led the Mountaineers with a career-high 25 points while shooting 4-5 from three and finishing 8-14 overall. Senior Isaac Caudill had a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore Marquis Mackey also contributed 10 points for the Mountaineers.

The Mountaineers came out strong in the first half to give themselves as 10-point lead, but the Scots would match that by hitting some big three-pointers to bring themselves back into the game. The trend continued throughout the first half, but the Mountaineers were able to give themselves a five-point lead going into halftime (35-30).

The second half was an exciting one as both teams came out of the gate swinging. This continued to be the story of the second half until the very end, with 13 seconds left Montgomery went to the free throw line with two huge shots. Montgomery was able to hit one of those shots forcing the Scots into overtime. Unfortunately, the Mountaineers were unable to hit some shots in overtime allowing for Covenant to gain the lead and slowly put the game away.

The Berea College men's basketball team has a long break but will be back in action as they travel to Montgomery, Ala. to take on the Huntingdon College Hawks Friday February 3rd. Tipoff is slated for 8 p.m.
